Its use, benefits, significance & excellence in Islam
Miswak in Islamic term means a natural (botanical) stick used for brushing and cleaning teeth. It is the tradition of holy prophet much practiced by him and stressed upon. The excellence of Miswak is described by holy prophet in most of his sayings (Hadiths), the abstract of.
Which is as follows:-
1. The salah (Namaaz) performed after using Miswak has got seventy times excellence over a namaaz performed without using Miswak in reward of virtue granted by ALLAH.
2. Use of Miswak gains favor and pleasure of ALLAH.
3. Use of Miswak makes devil angry.
4. Miswak cleans the mouth.
5. Miswak creates a sort of good smell in mouth by vanishing bad smell.
6. Miswak strengthens gums and makes teeth firm and durable.
7. Miswak dispels choter (safrah).
8. Miswak removes phlegm (Belgham).
9. Miswak makes eye-sight sharp.
Religious scholars describe more or less seventy advantages of using Miswak and one of them is that a Muslim using Miswak gets divine guidance to pronounce creedal testimony (kalma) at the time of his death.
Miswak has got many medical advantages also from health point of view. For instance use of Miswak makes teeth stronger which help a lot in masticating food, resulting in better digestion. It also provides protection against food pieces and particles sticking up in between teeth and getting putrefied; which ultimately go in stomach and create poisonous affects. Medical experts describe that strong teeth are helpful in successful cardiac surgery for heart patient.
How to use Miswak:-
Do not hold Miswak in hand with wrist closed; but hold the Miswak in your right hand with your last smallest finger coming under one end of the Miswak and thumb under the other end of the Miswak and remaining fingers on top of the Miswak. Don’t clean by brushing Miswak vertically but brush it in horizontal direction by starting from right towards left, first upper teeth & then lower teeth. Repeat it at least thrice. Lastly take out Miswak from mouth, wash it, squeeze water from it and keep it in standing position with support of wall. Never throw it on ground wash the Miswak first, when ever it is needed to be used again.
Usually such bitter sticks of salvadora persica (peelo), Olive or Neem trees, and sticks straight & without knot are advised to be better, which should be neither soft nor harder. Miswak stick should be as thick as the smallest finger and one span in length. Miswak should be used at the time of gargle and rinsing of mouth with water.
